Manifesto

1. We were told to keep our voices down.
2. Lower, they said. Calmer. Classier. Later.
3. Meanwhile, the powerful never lowered theirs.
4. They said it on stages, in parliaments, on live television, into microphones they own. And nothing happened.
5. This cube collects what they said. Not rumours. Not edits. Their words, their dates, their sources.
6. From outside, the glass is silent. Inside, it is everything we were expected to swallow.
7. In here, an order to starve a city and a joke about a woman's looks arrive in the same voice. That is how they reach us every day.
8. There is no button. No polite way out. The only thing that silences it is your own voice.
9. Shout. Not so that they hear you. So that you hear yourself again.
10. Being calm does not bring change.
11. Lieber laut. Better loud.

How it works here

This web version puts you inside the cube. Its glass is smoked, like the one-way glass of an interrogation room. Sixteen LED rows run the statements below, each in its original language. Your microphone measures how loud you are, inside your browser only. Nothing is recorded, stored or sent. Shout past the red line and the rows stall, flicker and go dark. Stop, and they return.

The voices

Every statement below was made in public and is documented; the source is linked. Each is spoken in its original language. Where only a published English translation could be verified, it is marked as such. Omissions are marked with “…”. The voices you hear are synthetic, generic text-to-speech voices. They are not the speakers' own voices and do not imitate them. The words, dates and sources are theirs.
